Broward County was formed from portions of Dade and Palm Beach Counties in 1915 and named for former Florida governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. In less than a century, a land "unfit for human habitation" had been turned into the permanent home of over a million people and the winter residence of tens of thousands more.
In 1920, developer Joseph W. Young, Jr., purchased the first square mile to begin the city he would call "Hollywood by the Sea." His city was planned with wide boulevards, parks, vistas and harmonious architecture derived from styles then popular in southern California where he had lived. Moorish and Spanish-eclectic styles are still evident in buildings throughout our community.

We receive about 55 inches of rain per year and no snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is approximately 97. On average, we have 246 sunny days annually. The July high is around 90 degrees while the January low is 58.
Broward County Public Schools include 3 high schools, 4 middle schools and 13 elementary schools. You can also choose from a plethora of private options. There are numerous academies of higher learning within 26 miles of our town.

We have two hospitals and our own medical center, as well as an airport and Amtrak station.
Hollywood offers ample recreation through its close proximity to Fort Lauderdale and lovely beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. We also are home to city parks, golf courses, museums, a planetarium, the International Swimming Hall of Fame, gardens, cultural centers and much more.
